These "Thoughts on Leadership" were presented at a meeting of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international educational society for women, by a long-time friend, Barbara Chinworth, whose thoughts are reprinted here with her kind permission.
Leadership is a feather in one's cap ... or a pain in one's backside.
Leadership is on a moment's notice --- or for a term which can seem interminable.
Leadership is lonely ... but of necessity has a fellowship.
Leadership is an opportunity ... and an obligation.
Leadership is forged on the job ... but often with materials lying latent.
Leadership propels one's own scholarship ... and illuminates one's lack of same.
Leadership is unique to the individual ... but by force shares its qualities.
A leader ...
- sometimes emerges without election
- is often not out in front
- is sometimes soft-spoken
- is often not decorated
- is sometimes a parent, or a child
- often fears failure
- is sometimes successful
It is helpful, wise and beneficial to revise one's concept of a leader.
YOU are probably a leader somewhere, somehow, and to someone.
